KATHLEEN GATES

Artist Statement
I have always loved the outdoors. While out walking, hiking, camping or traveling, it is natural for me to photograph, draw, and paint anything relative to nature. Painting is my way of sharing what I see and puts my feelings and life on paper. The artist Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was my first inspiration when I viewed his art at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, New York in my late teens. I was awestruck when I saw his painting “The Voyage of Life”. The techniques he used and the messages that came through to me were something I have never forgotten.

I married, moved to California, raised a family and then when I retired from Aerospace, started involving myself in taking classes at the Goebel Adult Center.

Although I have painted in other mediums, oil, acrylic, and watercolor, colored pencil is now my favorite. My work has been juried into art shows and it has won awards. I’m continuing my education by taking colored pencil classes through Adult Education and with private instruction with a professional artist. I partake in workshops and demonstrations, as they are a wonderful way to experiment with both new and older methods of creating.  My goal is to continue to better my skills to bring to my paintings the feeling that Thomas Cole instilled in me.

Colored Pencil Painting allows me to work with color to bring depth and my feelings to the picture. My favorite subjects are flowers, landscapes, trees, and animals. I use many layers to build a painting.  Different brands of pencil and types of paper give colored pencil various looks similar to pastels and watercolors. Watercolor pencils as well as watercolors used along with the colored pencils can also give other effects to the painting. I enjoy trying different techniques to see what results can emerge and can be applied to future paintings.
